Epidaurus

Epidaurus

Epidaurus lies 15 km (9 mi) east of Nauplion. It was built in the south slopes of mount Arachnaeon.

According to Greek mythology Asklepios was the son of Apollo and Coronis.Coronis , while giving birth to Asklepios, was killed by a thunder . Apollo took his son to the physician Kentavros Chiron in Mt.Pelion, who instructed the boy in the healing arts. Apollo was worshipped at Mycaenean, Epidaurus and Achaean times but, by the 4th century BC, he had been superseded by his son. Epidaurus became known as the birthplace of Asklepios. The two most important sanctuaries of Asklepios was that of Epidaurus and that on the island of Kos. It is believed that licks from snakes were one of the curative practices at the sanctuary. Asklepios is normally shown with a serpent which-by renewing its skin-symbolizes rejuvenation. The theatre of Epidaurus was built at the beginning of the 3rd century B, work of sculptor Polykletos the younger, according to tradition. It is one of the best preserved classical buildings, and world famous for its amazing acoustics.Even a coin dropped in the center can be heard from the highest seats. Built in limestone the theatre seats up to 14000 people. The museum houses surgical instruments, stone inscriptions recording miraculous cures, statues, etc. In the south of sanctuary is Catagogeion, to the west the Banquet hall and the foundations of the Temple of Asklepios.East is the Sanctuary of Egyptian Gods.

Must see: The Theatre of Epidaurus is the best preserved ancient theatre, with excellent acoustics where musical and dramatic performances are still given. The circular orchestra, rows of the entrances (parodoi) and the remains of the scene are well preserved. The Museum of Epidaurus contains many antiquities of Argolis region.
