Philippi

Philippi

The ancient city of Phlippi is 15 km (10mi) northeast from the town of Kavala in the foothills of Mt.Pangaio, rich in gold in the ancient time.

Philippi took its name from the King Philip II of Macedonians who captured it in 356 BC .Its importance grew with the construction of the Egnatia as a military road. It was here that, in 42 BC, the famous battle was waged against Caesar's assassins. In Philippi St.Paul preached the Gospel for the first time on European soil in AD 49. The exacted area extends to right and left of the modern road : on the left is the large Roman forum and on the right the ruins of the theater, the Basilica and, at the top, the Acropolis crowned by medieval fortifications short distance from Basilica was a Roman crypt, considered to be the place where St.Paul was incarcerated and later painted with scenes from his life.

Must see: Casilia A, Basilica B, The Theatre, the site's museum housing some Christian and Roman finds, the Roman crypt, etc
