Mycenae

Mycenae

Located in Peloponese 135 km (90 mi) southwest of Athens (about 2 hours drive).

The 'Golden City' of Homer, the Ancient capital of the Mycenean Civilization. Starting point of the Trojan expedition of the Acheans. Ancient history comes to life in Agamemnon's Mycenae, with the remarkable Beehive Tombs and the 3,000 year old Lionesse's Gate. According to Homer and Aeshcylus 'Oresteia', the city of Mycenae was founded by Perseus. Perseus killed the hideous snake-haired Medusa.

Mycenae was first settled by Neolithic people in the 6th millennium BC.Between 2,100 - 1,900 BC Greece was invaded by people of Indo-European stock who came from Anatolia to Greece. The invaders brought their culture to Mycenae and other mailland settlements. This new civilisation is known as Mycenaean, civilisation named after Mycenae. Archaelogical finds indicate that the palaces of Mycenaen kingdoms were destroyed around 1,200 BC.

Must see: The Cyclopian rampart, the Treasury of Atreus or Tomb of Agamemnon, the Lionesse's Gate, so called because above it two lionesses support a pillar of the Royal House of Atreus, the Tomb of Clytaemnistra, the Palace, the Throne Room, the Great Court, and the Megaron.
